OktoberFast Challenge: UPDATE Week 5/5

How was YOUR October? Did you lose some weight? Increase your workouts? Eat anything made with pumpkin? Drink any good Oktoberfest-type beers?

The point of our OktoberFast event this month was to try to use the month to push ourselves to go further in our efforts than we have gone before.  Patrick from The Road designed our banner, but more importantly, had an AWESOME month with some big races and an awesome first place finish.  Click the link above and check out his great month!

I definitely will have ridden more miles than in any previous month, but did not meet my specific goals.  I intended to lose weight, but really did not work at it much at all.  I also intended to run 30 miles, but did not do that much either (only 7 miles).  Instead, I guess I focused my efforts on cycling.  My goal was 200 miles and I have ridden 132 miles as of this morning.  I will ride again today, after church.  I'll update later in the day.   But this means that I will have ridden more miles this month than I ever have before in a month, so I'm happy about that.  And eager to do even more going forward.  I'll hit 200 cycling miles in November.

UPDATE:  Samson and I went out this afternoon and got 26.5 miles in!  Add to that some neighborhood miles to Tig's house for a quick wheel adjustment and I did 29 miles today.  That makes for a month-long total of all-time high for me and I am pleased with it.

A very light day is planned around our house.  Some reading, some cycling and a lot of time to reconnect as a family.  I've got two days left to get in miles for OktoberFast and if I don't hit my cycling goal, I'll at least get close.

Looking Back...Looking Ahead

Today is my daughter's birthday.  She is 15 years old today and becoming a wonderful young woman.  She is smart, kind, funny, humble and very intelligent.  I am totally in love with my girl and we are extremely proud of her. 

I started this blog just over one year ago.  In my post a year ago, I wrote about how my workouts were two "river loops" in about an hour.  That is about 13 miles.  Not a fast pace and I confess that I am really not much faster now, but I tend to ride more often with other, newer cyclists now, so who knows how fast I would be on my own.  On my post a year ago, I only see comments from my daughter.  Very sweet and encouraging.

These reminded me of where I was a year ago and how far I feel I've come.  A year ago, I weighed about 50 pounds more and had yet to ride in my first race, El Tour de Tucson.  My goal was simply to finish.  Could a guy who weighed 325 pounds ride 35 miles before the street lights came on and the race was closed down?  I did about 2 and 1/2 hours and it remains one of the biggest highlights of my life. 

Since then, I gained confidence and lost a lot of weight.  I raced my bike in 3 other races.  I got in good enough shape where I could run for 90 seconds at a time, then 5 minutes, then 7, then 11 minutes...until my friend RockStar Tri just told me to keep going and I ran a 5k distance (3.1 miles).    My 5k time dropped from 52 minutes to 34 minutes!  I have a certificate that shows that I was third in my age group on the last run! 

People comment a lot about my weight loss and I know that I go through periods where I am focused on either exercise (like this month) OR weight loss (last summer)...rarely both at the same time.  Yet, I'm still very pleased with it all.

Looking ahead, I will be so proud to ride in this year's El Tour de Tucson with my son and my good friend Crazy Jim.  Both started cycling this year, in large part, due to my cycling.   When this race is behind me, I know that my focus will be on choosing a longer riding distance for myself at some point in 2011 and to start training for a 10k in Q1 of 2011 and I'm even cautiously considering a half-marathon or sprint tri later in 2011. 

In January of 2010, I wrote out a list of goals for 2010.  Here's the link.  I achieved every goal, except my cycling mileage goal, which was very aggressive.  The walking/running miles became more convenient and required less time from home.  Other than that, all goals achieved.  Remarkable for this former couch potato.

I realize that this post seems a bit self-congratulatory and I don't want to seem as if I am seeking some atta-boys from anyone reading this.  I just wanted to pause and document how grateful I am for what I've experienced this year.   Perhaps if I should stumble in the future (or if anyone out there is wondering if they too can make subtle lifestyle changes and get dramatic results)...this post can remind me/us that change is always  possible.  You don't have to be a former jock, or massively obsessive-compulsive about a new healthy addiction.  Reasonable changes, when steadily applied, can bring dramatic results.  Consider the river running through the Grand Canyon.

I'll end this with some words that I wrote at the end of that original post about my goals:
I have been blessed with these positive things in my life and I believe that God is calling me to finally get serious about improving my health. I will not waste this time.

Samson's El Tour Training - The Mountain Goat

Hi, everyone!  I want to let you know how my training is going.  Dad and I ride together at least once a week, sometimes more.  I think I have really improved and am feeling much more comfortable on the bike.

One goal I had was to ride 25 miles by my 12-year birthday in early October.  I did it!  Man, it was hard! We did many hills and Big Clyde said I pounced up those hills and he said I’m a mountain goat, which explains today's picture.   We went on this long road for a while, and it felt like it was uphill the whole time. Big Clyde said it will be down hill when we come back this way, but it didn’t feel that way at all, it felt no easier the 2nd time.  It was my longest ride beating the previous record of 15 miles. 

When we got up to the top of the hill, my dad took me to this cool area where they built a tunnel into the mountain and we rode into that tunnel.  That was kind of my reward for doing such a long ride!

When I started my training, I was not very comfortable on my bike.  I couldn't stand up while riding and I didn't want to go very fast.  Now, I feel I can do almost everything.  I change gears without thinking of it to help me get up hills.  My friends didn't believe that I could do this, but now, they know I can.

Last weekend, we did a 19 mile ride and I knew I could keep going (but was glad to stop).  My next goal is to do 31 miles by 10/31.  This means that I'll be riding my longest 31 mile ride this coming weekend.  The mountain goat will be out there, climbing hills.  Wish me luck!

Want To See It?

I know, I know...I've been very self-indulgent in my blogging about the vintage bike thing.  But, this post is different...I purchased!

First, a little music to take you back to a simpler time about 35 years ago:

On Saturday morning, my daughter and I took a road trip to check out this vintage bike.  It is sad that a bike from 1975 is considered vintage.  I was 10-years-old then.  Here's the Schwinn catalog cover from 1975.  It even has people riding in Arizona...must be a sign.

The bike is a Schwinn Collegiate 1975 model (built in October, 1974).  It has original paint, gears, everything, except a replacement seat and new tires.  Here it is:

I love it because, unlike the more common Schwinn cruisers of the 50's and 60's (which are very common collector bikes now), this bike was built for an adult.  Before the early 1970's, most bikes were really built for kids.  I'm 6'4", so I needed a taller bike.  This works for me.  I also love the chrome and the original chain guard, etc.  . 

I will add an authentic Schwinn chrome light to it and a rack to the back, so that I can use it to go the grocery store and for local errands.    Given that I am only riding it on the bike paths and sidewalks of my very quiet neighborhood, I am not going to wear a helmet and definitely, I will wear no stretchy pants on this bike.  In fact, I should only wear tie-dye when I ride this.

I still know that my HUCC-B bike fits me better, rides more efficiently, etc., but this one definitely has got some cool vintage style to it that I could not pass up for the price.  It would have been fun at Tour de Fat and I will seek out more bike-fun events with it!

As for the week, Samson and I rode about 18 miles on Sunday and I rode 14 miles yesterday with my wife, then ran 2 miles last night.  I will try to get in more mileage tonight, because I have 68 miles to go before Sunday night.  Should be fine.

OktoberFast Challenge: UPDATE Week 4/5

We have one week left in the OktoberFast Challenge!   How are you doing with your goals?

So far, this month has been great for me, though I may not accomplish all of my goals.  You can see my goals and progress in the section above.

I have been to a few UofA football games, went to the Tour de Fat and had some great beers, have had two pumpkin lattes and have transitioned from cycling in shorts to cycling in layers and sweats.  Fall has arrived in the desert.

As for me this week, I rode 53 miles, which is more than I rode most months this year and twice what I did last week.  This week, I'll ride at least 72 miles, so that I can finish the cycling goal.  As for running, I will likely only run twice, giving me about 10 miles for the month.  That is pretty poor considering that the goal was 30 miles, but when all is added up, it will still be a big month for me. 

I really thought that I would get in some running mileage, but my main goal now is to get in cycling miles with Samson (my 12-year-old son) who will be in the big race with me next month.   And now that Mrs. Clyde has a new road bike, I am enjoying getting in some miles with her too.  I'll get back to running after El Tour.

I'm Not Old, I'm "Vintage"

Does anyone want to buy my old couch?  It's a classic, made in the mid-1960's?  By the way, it is still in it's original condition with factory upholstery.  Sure, there's some wear and tear, but that only adds to the charm of an authentic classic!

I have some other things to sell that are rare collectibles!  How about one of my classic washing machines?!  They are untouched and left in their original condition.  Yes, the parts are somewhat hard to find and new models are much more efficient, but these are true classics from the golden age of washing machines.  These beauties are extremely valuable because of the genuine rust spots.  You can't fake that corrosion.  It's a sign of beauty!

Okay, some old things went away because they needed to.  They fell out of fashion.  Technology, design and efficiency improved and new models came along.  The "old" things are better left in our past.

But there is something very cool about certain classic or vintage products and I realize now that I am obsessed with the beauty and coolness of vintage bicycles.

I have been writing about this in the few previous blog posts, so please forgive me for revisiting this topic.  But I have been intrigued to read a few other blogs that have written about their vintage bikes.  Check out these two links:   Simply Bike and Fool's Fitness.  In fact, on the link for Fool's Fitness, you can even see a comment that I left in May where I expressed my desire to get a vintage bike someday.

My point, obviously, is that vintage bikes are cool.  I can picture myself atop one now, the envy of the neighborhood.

I'll ride one tomorrow and hopefully, if the glass slipper fits, it will be mine.

(By the way, some of you have asked about the many Andre the Giant pictures that I use on this site.  I love Andre from the Princess Bride movie and I once saw him struggling outside of a Tokyo hotel that we were both staying at.  I felt badly for him and in some ways, I identify with being always the biggest/tallest guy in the room...always.  So, I usually like to use pictures of him as the face of Big Clyde.  Where do I get the pictures?  Internet, baby, internet.  He was a celebrity and since I started the blog, I occasionally search for Andre pics while I am on the phone or while watching tv.  I have tons now.  I just drop them in when an image fits a particular topic.)

Mileage, Mileage, Vintage

This month has been busier than expected.  I am having to get my mileage in via frequent, smaller workouts, rather than some really long rides. 

For example, my wife and I had a nice 13 mile ride on Monday.  Fine.  On Tuesday night, I went out at about 5pm for a longer ride, but got a flat at the one-mile mark and had to walk it back.  I fixed in and did just 11 cycling miles tonight (Wednesday).

Thursday:  I can ride, maybe run also.
Friday:  I'm doing a super favor for a VIP customer (they better appreciate it!).  I will be driving to Temecula, CA and back.  That should be about 10-12 hours of driving.  Leaving the house at 4am.  Guh.  No workouts on Friday.
Saturday:  I am going to test-drive a new (old) Vintage bike in Scottdale (2 hours away).  It may be my new ride!  Then, I am going to see the UofA beat UW.  Got to get a ride in somewhere with Samson.
Sunday:   Catch-up day.  Before and after church, I will grind out mileage.

So, we are 2/3 of the way through the OktoberFast Challenge and I am only halfway through my cycling miles and only 5 miles into my 30 running mile goal.  Will this goal be difficult?  Yes, but definitely possible.

My focus for the next several days?  Driving mileage, cycling mileage, and hopefully, buying a vintage bike.

By the way, the vintage bike I'm going to test-drive could be awesome.   I just hope I am not too tall for it.  Wouldn't it be great if the bike is a perfect fit, cool and bright red?

I Am Obsessed with Shiny Objects

When I went to the Tour de Fat, I dressed like a fool (and was the most popular Viking there).  But my bike?  It was as serious as it could be:  a subtle grey frame with properly maintained gears, all fixtures in black, grey or light grey.  The bike looked like it was giving it's daughter away at her wedding.  It looked like a bank manager.  My bike looks like a paperclip on wheels.  Where's the fun or style in that?

But I saw so many OUTRAGEOUS bikes there.  I saw my cool childhood Schwinn Sting-Ray with the 3-speed shifter on the center bar and the green banana seat.  I saw so much chrome, so much color, so much nostalgia.  These people weren't monitoring their average speeds or cadence levels on their bike computers.  They were cruising on their cool bikes simply because it was fun.

So, I suggested to our group that we all ought to buy some low-cost, Craigslist vintage bikes for us to cruise in our neighborhood (we all live in the same hood).   My friend TIG ("because he's a TIG welder") said that there is a new pub going in to our neighborhood and we should ride our bikes there.  Done and done.

I am now obsessed.  I can't help myself.  I keep looking online at these gorgeous, vintage bikes that remind me of my childhood.  I want one.  A shiny one.

I think I will settle on Schwinn's from the early 60's to the 70's.  Let the good times roll.

I Just Rode My Bike 1,000 Miles!

Yes, my bike computer just rolled over to the 1,000 mile mark!  I installed it on my bike in June of 2009 and I actually had ridden several miles before getting the bike computer (and a short ride after the recent Tour de Fat where the bicycle sensor was put on the wrong side, etc, etc.), but the point is...I have a bike computer that just documented 1,000 miles and I think that is pretty amazing for a former couch potato like me!  That is like riding my bike from Tucson, Arizona to Disneyland...and back...and then, doing El Tour de Tucson.

Anyway, it is a big round number so it seemed fun to make note of it, but the next 500 miles will come more quickly.  Some of you heroes out there do this in a 3-month period, so I know that I shouldn't get too complacent! 

By the way, Mrs. Clyde was with me on this big ride and she was having an important ride herself!  She was breaking in her new Trek Lexa and I was on my HUCC-B bike.  To mark the 1,000-mile event, I asked Mrs. Clyde to pull over and kiss me.  Seemed the right thing to do.

As for the OktoberFast Challenge, it is still game on, though I have to get my tail in gear.  I will do it and it should get me in great shape.   Good times.

Also, I rode to a friend's house last night, which added just another 2 miles on the bike (I should've run it!).  Got to to get those miles in whenever I can!

OktoberFast Challenge: UPDATE Week 3/5

I guess I just took my longest hiatus from the blog world since I started this thing a year ago.  I was off the blog for about a week, though it felt much longer than that.  Thanks for your e-mails checking in.  I am fine.

Here is what DIDN'T happen over the past week:
  • I did not go to a "dark place" and eat everything in sight (though that feeling could strike at any moment).
  • I did not give up on my goals for OktoberFast.
  • I was not arrested or detained in a holding cell, pending a court date.
Here is what DID transpire over the past week:
  • I ate pretty well, put in some miles on the bike and went for one run, though I should have done more.
  • I bought a new road bike for my lovely wife, Mrs. Clyde.  This is a much-needed upgrade to her 10-year-old Mongoose mountain bike that was NEVER used for mountain biking. 
  • I had a few work trips and worked a trade show last weekend.
  • I spent a lot of time on a new obsession, which is still a part of The Clydesdale Project.  (More on that tomorrow).
So, my friends, I am sorry that I have not checked in with this blog or on yours over the past week (although I have checked in on some blogs without leaving comments).  I am curious to hear how everyone is doing.

Tour de Fat - The Photo Album

This past weekend, we did the Tour de Fat in Tempe, AZ.  Every year, New Belgium Brewery  ( holds a bike event that is all about silliness, celebrating bicycling and beer-tasting.  I decided about six months ago that I wanted to do this.  Since I have only been cycling for about a year, my focus has been on mileage training for some races and losing weight.  I wanted to go to this event so that I could just relax and have fun on the bike.  This event was a blast!

Five of us went and we decided to go all out and wear stupid costumes (this was a easy decision given that the event was about 2 hours away from our hometown and no one would know us!).  Lisa wore butterfly wings, Janette was a hippie with a crazy hat and earrings, Jim was a chick-magnet, and Crazy Jim started out as...well, he just wore some funny stuff and played along, until he went weird on the ride home.  I went as a viking.

The beer was tasty, the weather was great and there were crazy bikes there.  Here are the pics:

OktoberFast Challenge: UPDATE Week 2/5

Another week is gone, so how did everyone do?

As for me, it was a poor week in terms of mileage, but I saw that one coming.  I had some other commitments on the schedule, so I only got in 10 miles on the bike.  I'm off work on Monday and Tuesday, so I'll get a bit caught up then and into the week.    Should be fun!  (But I do need to get my food under control, and fast!). 

Update:  Samson and I just did 25 miles on the bike!  He will write about it soon!

Advice Needed: Bike Racks

I think it is time to get a bike rack that could accomodate 4-5 bikes on the back of an SUV-type vehicle.  I am willing to pay for quality, because I hate dealing with cheap stuff that breaks or doesn't work well. 

Any suggestions on brands or models?

This is shaping up to be an interesting week.    It started with horrendous storms and it will end with Big Clyde being in a parade, wearing a goofy costume. 

We started with a series of stormy days, rare for this time of year in the desert.  Here are a few pics:

I have been very behind in following others' blogs recently and I am hoping to catch up and see how everyone is doing.  I have not been very disciplined this week on exercise or diet, but I am off work for the next 4 days and we have several rides planned.  This will be a good catch-up period for me with my OktoberFast mileage goals, a BIG ride weekend for Samson (yes, we are planning on a 25-mile ride!), and I will get back on track with my calorie budget.  I'll do the usual weekly OktoberFast update on Sunday night.  Please comment in and let us know how you are all doing.

And now, the Oktoberfest Beer Review.  First, I'll tell you that I like beer, but I don't drink it much.  I am not a snob, but if I'm going to have a beer, I want it to be something good.  So, this week I bought a sixer of Sierra Nevada's Tumbler amber ale.

 Quick review:  tasty, creamy, mellow.  If you don't drink beer, imagine that it was a bit like caramel.  I loved it. 

Now, I just need some big tuba player and my wife to wear one of those beer wench costumes and I will truly be in the Oktoberfest spirit.  Wish me luck.

Tomorrow, my wife and I will join some friends up in Phoenix at the Tour de Fat, an event sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Company.  I'll post pictures, but here's a few from when Katy went to the one in Denver last month.

And finally, I received something in the mail yesterday.  It was a certificate from the organizers of the El Tour de Tucson 5K run that I did two weeks ago.  I already wrote about the race here.  They sent me a certificate for finishing in 3rd place in my age group!  I already knew that this is where I ranked (there were only five guys in my age/gender group), but this was the first time in my life that I ever "placed" in a racePretty exciting and it makes me wonder why I went for so many years without trying to exercise.  At age 44, I am changing my life.  Maybe, I'll be #1 in my age group in a future race!

It Ain't Easy Being Green - 2010 version

It's early and I am checking a few news websites and came upon this video (because we Americans have to be entertained while receiving our news).

Some of you might remember the early days of Sesame Street and Kermit the Frog.  I actually remember watching the first episode of Sesame Street, while I was in a steam tent to help me through chronic bronchitis as a kid.  The breakaway hit of the show was when Kermit the Frog sang "It Ain't Easy Being Green".  I didn't like the song...too sad and introspective for this kid.

Well, it appears that Kermit is still working out his issues.  Only now, he is a bit angrier and yes, suffering from multiple personality disorder.  I wish him well and hope that he gets through his current struggles.  Life is hard when you are a muppet on the streets.  You can see his conflict at it's peak at the 2:20 mark.

OktoberFast Challenge: UPDATE Week 1/5

Hey everyone!  Thanks for joining in this challenge. 

I see that some people are still joining in (as recently as today) and that is awesome!  If you want to, please use the graphic above (created by Patrick at The Road) and put it on your own site to show people what you are doing.  For each update, I'll post this link to show who is in and their goals for the month.

So, this will be the first of 5 Sunday night posts where you can comment in and let us know how you are progressing toward your goals.  The final UPDATE will be on 10/31, which will end the challenge.  I hope everyone is doing well!

For me, it was a busy weekend.  I ran 3.1 miles on Friday night and did 15 cycling miles on Saturday and another 15 cycling miles on Sunday.   It was not exactly what I wanted to get done this weekend, but trust me, I am just getting started!

How did you do in these first few days of OktoberFast?

And let's not forget, there is a fun "Oktoberfest" element to this!  Does anyone have any recommendations, reviews or recipes for something yummy that fits in with this season?  I am going to be sticking pretty close to my calorie budget, but with the increased cardio, I will splurge in small quantities to try some good beer, or some other "Oktoberfest"-themed food.  What should I try?

It is already working for me.  This will be brief, but I drove my truck to the local repair shop to get some maintenance work done on it.  I took my son and our two bikes with us and we rode back home (3.5 miles).
By the way, this was my younger son, who is 9-years-old.  He is resigned to the fact that he won't be joining his soon-to-be 12-year-old brother with me on the 40 mile route of El Tour de Tucson.   He'll be doing the 6-mile fun ride.  But he did do a 5K walk/run with me last summer and may do another before the end of the year.  The little man is fast!  Until now, he was nicknamed "CuppaJoe".  Today, he said that he wanted to change his nickname on this blog to "Little Clyde"  How cool is that? 

We got home right before it started raining and a storm warning was issued.  Needing to get more miles in, I actually dragged out my "cyclops", or Cycle Ops Fluid 2 trainer.   I bought this pricey baby on eBay last year (because I was advised that cheaper models wouldn't hold my weight).  I hated it last fall and winter because it was so uncomfortable.  Tonight, I got on for the first time in maybe 10 months (at a much lower weight!).  It rocked.  I stayed on for about 45 minutes at an estimated 16 mph pace.  So, that was another 12 miles today. 

I also did a very slow 5K walk/run last night.  Embarrasingly slow, but at least I got it in. 

Mrs. Clyde was attending to a family friend for much of the day and we all did some prep work for Samson's birthday party tomorrow.  Our boy is turning 12!  This morning, he went to a paintball park with some friends.  It was his first time and he was concerned about the pain (we Clydes try to avoid pain at all costs).  Near the end of their three-hour battle, we received this text "I have the 2nd best bruise, besides Travis, who is bleeding!"  I told him that bleeding is a sign of weakness, so his bruise is #1 in my book!    What a tough guy!

OktoberFast Challenge Begins

I'm glad that this is of interest to some people out there.  I know that I will benefit from it.   Thanks for joining us.

Indeed, I have gone backward on my weight loss, but it can't be too much because everything I am wearing is the smallest stuff that I have dug out from 10 years back.  Nonetheless, it is time to get focused and set some aggressive goals.

I'll write about this in a future post, but please realize the beauty in failing a VERY AGGRESSIVE goal.  Easy goals can be achieved.  In fact, some goals are set so low (because we want to guarantee success) that we don't even really have to put in great effort. 

But for OktoberFast, I would rather set aggressive goals and come close and miss, than set easy ones and hit them.  This month, I am getting medieval...lowest weight, most cycling miles, most running miles.

Here are my goals: 
Cycling miles:  200 
Running miles:  30
Weight: 270

I'll post an update for everyone to jump in on Sunday night.
